Chemical Skin Peel

Chemical Peel Process in Newcastle

TCA - Trichloroacetic Acid Peels is sometimes used when other peels have failed to correct the problem. It is also an effective treatment for -

  • Moderately wrinkled skin
  • Facial blemishes
  • Uneven pigmentation and acne

This chemical peel is most performed for cosmetic reasons to enhance your skins appearance. Chemical peels may also remove pre-cancerous skin growths, soften acne facial scares and even control acne.

The results of a TCA peel are usually more dramatic and long lasting than those of AHA peels. The goal of chemical peeling is to remove a controlled thickness of damaged skin to stimulate normal healing and skin rejuvenation. The effects of chemical peeling are like what can be achieved with other skin resurfacing methods such as laser and Medical dermabrasion with one important factor being that chemical peeling is the least expensive treatment of the three.

With just one TCA treatment you can expect an outstanding visible improvement in skin tone and texture, and a more youthful complexion. You can expect a significant reduction in superficial acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and age spots, a brighter and firmer looking skin and an increase in collagen production and cell renewal. Trichloroacetic acid is typically used as an immediate to deep peeling agent. The treatment application process is rapid, requiring only 30 minutes at most from start to finish. The cooler months are ideal for chemical peels because initially you are more sun sensitive.

What does a skin peel feel like?

The application of TCA follows a thorough cleansing of the area to be treated. Immediately you will experience warmth and a burning sensation that lasts a few minutes and can be terminated at any time if you find the heat sensation too uncomfortable. A handheld fan is given to you to assist in your comfort. Some people experience slight redness and puffiness from the procedure, but this is generally gone in a couple of hours. Once the procedure is complete, the healing process begins immediately.

When will my skin peel?

The TCA peel can be used on the face, neck and chest. The face usually peels 4 to 7 days after the treatment. The neck and chest 6 to 8 days. Generally, the peeling will last 3 to 5 days. Even though the peeling process is a bit of a nuisance, most people can still go about their day-to-day business as usual. It is very important not to peel the skin off during the peeling process but to let it come away when the underlying skin is ready. Your therapist will tell you when you can begin exfoliating as this is based on the area treated. During the time of peeling and healing you are required to keep the skin moist with creams and sunscreen. Sorbolene is a good cream for you to use after your peel as it has no active ingredients in it. So maybe purchase it from your Chemist prior to your treatment.

  • No hot baths or showers for 2 days. Do not exert or exercise for 24 to 72 hours after your treatment.
  • If you are doing any activity that makes your face heat up, you MUST stop and apply a cool compress to cool the skin down.
  • Try to NEVER touch your skin with uncleansed fingers.
  • Change your pillowcase on the day of the treatment and every 3 days following.
  • In most cases of chemical peels, normal skin colour will return in 15 to 45 minutes
  • Mild swelling occasionally occurs after your peel, and it may last up to three days.
  • Itchiness is rare in the week following your peel but is relieved by moisturising.
  • Little to no makeup is preferred but when needed it is safest to use a Mineral Make-up. Once the peeling has finished you can resume your normal make-up.
  • Absolutely no sun exposure can be had for 2 weeks following your peeling treatment, with minimal sun exposure in the following 2 months. Strong sunscreen must be applied religiously and always wear a hat to avoid direct sunlight on the treated areas.
  • Depending on the depth of peel you have had, recovery time varies from 1 week to 10 days on the face and even longer on the neck and chest.
  • Wash your face twice daily with a gentle creamy cleanser then apply a gentle moisturiser that contains no active ingredients. e.g. Sorbolene.
  • Initially your skin will appear red and within a few days your superficial skin layers will darken, become stiff and resemble leather or plastic. The skin will then crack, flake and peel. Depending on the depth of the peel you have had, your new skin will appear bright and maybe a little flushed, with the flushing fading slowly over a couple of weeks. It is vital that SPF be worn constantly on this new skin. If you cannot find a SPF that you like and/or it irritates your skin, then please let us know and we will provide you with one.
